An ancient Ukranian craft

  • • Daria creates a bridge between traditional and modern craft
  • • She experiments with different paper cutting techniques
  • • Her main artistic theme is femininity

A classically trained monumental and decorative sculptor, Daria Alyoshkina turned to the ancient traditional Ukrainian art of vytynanka after failing to combine the sculptor profession with motherhood. One of her main reasons for choosing the craft of paper cutting was her desire to preserve this magnificent art for the coming generations. Today, Daria is an established vytynanka master with works exhibited all over the world. Big and small in size, her magical paper cut artworks explore the topics of womanhood, nature and symbolism. Taking her inspiration from the generations that have gone before her, Daria channels this energy to create a beautiful vytynanka world of her own, revitalizing this forgotten Ukrainian craft.

Shchedryk project

Daria Alyoshkinka used synthetic material to intricately handcut geometric imagery, accentuated by black background. The centre of each diptych panel features a human-like form. The project was an initiative of the National Museum of History of Ukraine and is dedicated to the great composer, Mykola Leontovych.

The magic of Easter eggs

Easter eggs and their symbolism are a great source of inspiration to Daria Alyoshkina's work. The techniques, symmetry and richness of Easter egg decorations inspired this paper panel. The embroidered eggs, intricately handcut from paper and set on a black background, depict a woman in the centre, a reference to the women who historically decorated these eggs.

Star Corsair

These intricately cut panels are dedicated to the Ukrainian science fiction writer Oles Berdnyk. The panels were handcut with a scalpel from synthetic materials. Contrary to tradition, they have not been placed on a background but rather against a window that lets light flood in through them, making their design apparent.
